UTM and University of Memphis Honor Band – 2019
Fayette Academy students were selected from a pool of students all over West TN and different states to participate in the UTM & University of Memphis Honor Band. The selection was based on an application and recommendation for each applicant. Student’s selected from Fayette Academy were Andrew Boozer, Dylan Bardwell, Casey Melton, NeeNee Lyons, Justin Martin, Cutler Cannon, and Jacob Cronogue. After selection, the students then prepared audition music and scales along with other elements for chair placement auditions. The students auditioned for their chair and band placement on Thursday and then rehearsed from Thursday night until their performance Saturday Morning.
The students’ placements were as follows:
These students all performed in their designated ensembles and performed a concert within two days. At the UTM honor band, each ensemble got to do a world premiere of a piece; they were the very first ensemble to perform the piece. At U of M, the students had the opportunity to work with one of the most prolific Band composers of our time, Mr. John Mackey. He sat in on their rehearsals giving them insight and wisdom in not only in his music but in all music. It was a great learning experience for all of the students!

Winter Retreat – 2019

Every year the Fayette Academy Ecology Club offers the opportunity for members to take a winter environmental retreat to enjoy nature and bond as a group. They participate in team-building, a Winter Walk, games, and movie night. This year they made clay bees and beehives for the Party for the Planet this Friday. Community Harvest Project
The Bee’s Bounty workers are stopping by to remind you about the opportunity to participate in Fayette Academy’s first community garden. The harvest opportunities are filling up fast. Less than ten spots remain. The first of the tomatoes and early sprouting vegetables are well underway. We have hired summer teen staff and are excited to let you know that Max Phillips will be joining the Bee’s Bounty for his summer project. Max is a recent Fayette Academy graduate who is currently attending Harvard. Max has a lot of experience in the garden, having run his own retail garden produce stand in past years. He will be helping us establish our heirloom seed bank along with maintaining the bio-intensive garden over the summer.
We want to send a special thank you to the Somerville Art and Garden Club for inviting us to be their monthly program during their luncheon. We were blessed to share our new organic community gardening project. Two of their members joined right on the spot! We thank them for their support and generous contribution to this community garden project. We are so thankful for member Ms. Suzanne Rhea who has graciously offered up pine needles for our mulch. The Ecology Club has set a new garden work day on February 23 to begin the establishment of the new bio-intensive garden beds and to plant the early crops such as peas, lettuce, spinach, carrots and more.
If you have any questions about Fayette Academy’s Community Harvest Project, the Bee’s Bounty, or would like to participate in 10 weeks of fresh organic produce, drop me a note and I will send you the detailed information. Participants will pick up their share of the bounty every Thursday during the morning or afternoon pick up. There will not be extra produce to sell because each Wednesday the harvest will be evenly distributed between all of the families participating. Please email me at dlburrus@fayetteacademy.com if you have any questions. Happy Gardening!

Bringing the Harvard Experience Home
Max Phillips, a Fayette Academy graduate and now a freshman at Harvard, visited Fayette Academy on January 8, 2019, to talk with middle school students in Mary Vanderpool’s English classes. Participating in a program called Harvard First Generation Return to Middle School, Max presented a PowerPoint to seventh and eighth graders about his experiences at Harvard and then answered any questions posed by the students. Along with discussing dorm life, academics, and extra-curricular activities, Max addressed a prominent misconception by many, including his family, friends, and even teachers: Harvard is too expensive! Max wanted students to know that this is not the case due to Harvard’s commitment to financial aid. He pointed out a student’s financial need will not hinder his or her chances of admission because Harvard offers scholarships based on need, not merit. In fact, 60 percent of students attending Harvard are awarded need-based scholarships—loan-free. Max further explained that he had applied to both public and private universities and colleges, in-state and out-of-state, and Harvard proved to be the least expensive.
Because of Harvard’s practice of need-based scholarships, Max volunteered to participate in the Harvard First Generation Return to Middle School program in order to let students know that they don’t have to apply to Harvard on a whim as he did, thinking even if he were accepted, he would not be able to afford admission. He wants students to know that attending Harvard is a possibility. His advice to students wishing to attend a college such as Harvard is the following: First, take all Advanced Placement and Honors classes offered because a school like Harvard is looking for students who stretch themselves and are willing to work hard. He said it is true that a B in an AP or Honors class is more valuable than an A in a standard one. Second, don’t let the lack of money keep you from applying because Harvard does not view one’s financial need as a deterrent. On the financial aid page of Harvard’s website, it states, “Admission to Harvard is need-blind, meaning your financial need will not impede your chances of admission, [and] once you are admitted to Harvard, we work closely with your family to ensure you can afford to come here.” Max is living proof that Harvard offers a need-based hand.
Max lives in Whiteville, Tennessee, and his parents are Aubrey Phillips and Susan Johnson. His grandfather, Tommy Phillips, lives in Toone, Tennessee, and was the subject of his college essay—Fishing with My Grandpa.
